They live with Gabrielle “Memere” Kerouac for a short period, but they move into their own apartment for the remainder of their eight month marriage. During this time, while Joan was working as a waitress to pay the bills, Jack was struggling with a new novel idea. After returning home one night, Jack was still struggling with his book, trying to start it. She states, “I started asking him questions. Questions about Neal, about traveling, cities, trains, New York, Mexico, cars, roads, friends, Neal, Neal, Neal, Neal and Neal. The questions, after a time, seemed to ignite some spark in Jack. He went back to his typewriter, and now he typed with accelerating speed” (Campbell,106). Three weeks later, Kerouac produced a long, continuous stretch of paper; the rough draft of what would later be called On The Road.
