The marriage ended after eight months when Joan decided to leave Jack after she refused to abort their unplanned child. “Forced to choose between Jack and the baby, Joan embraced her own future without hesitation, and the marriage dissolved in mutual bitterness in the spring of 1951” (Knight 88). Jack refused to believe that baby was his, but he had to accept responsibility after blood tests proved he was her father. He only met his daughter twice. Joan Haverty stood up to her husband and kept her child, not allowing his fear to rule over her decisions. She was already independent, so it was easy for her to go back to living alone.
Joan remarried, had twins, and moved around the country with her husband. Joan was a natural writer who constantly kept journals, but because of the constraining influence that society placed upon women, she never thought she could possibly be a writer. She kept her work silent. “Although she wrote constantly and tirelessly throughout her life, Joan destroyed most of it, for she viewed her writing as something private, a way she worked things out for herself” (Knight 88). She did show her writing to the public once, during the battles with Jack to claim and help raise their daughter. Her article was published in Confedential magazine in 1961, “My Ex-Husband, Jack Kerouac, Is an Ingrate.” Joan was not afraid to voice her opinion about her ex-husband, who had abandoned his only child.
